The state vs. Mahwah: How a ‘hate’ story unfolded

The State Attorney General’s Office on Tuesday filed a scathing civil complaint against Mahwah, saying the town used ordinances to target Orthodox Jews in an effort to keep them out of the township.

The council will first meet behind closed doors to discuss the compliant by Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino, which seeks an injunction on two ordinances the state alleges are unconstitutional.

Porrino has pulled no punches, calling Mahwah’s actions “Hateful,” “Small-minded” and “Biased.”

The state seeks a return of $3.4 million in Green Acres funds from Mahwah after it said a New Jersey residents-only park ordinance violated the terms of the grants.
